Earlier this week I shared my review of The Hollows, a historical mystery set in 1920s Ohio. Today we’re in 1855 New Hampshire with The Companion by Kim Taylor Blakemore.
The Companion is the tale of Lucy Blunt, a poor young women who must fend for herself in the world. She’s telling her story and might be a bit of an unreliable narrator, maybe even a liar, but does that make her a murderer? Does she deserve to hang?
Emma Donoghue blurbed the book, which is pretty cool. I’ve read several books by Donoghue and can see why she’d like this novel. She’s perhaps best known for Room, but in relation to The Companion, I’m thinking about Donoghue’s earlier novel, Slammerkin, which is set in 1764 England and was inspired by the life of a young woman who was hanged for murder.
