Prepping for National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month and the Book Cougars have something in the works to celebrate. As part of that,  I was at B&N yesterday browsing around in the poetry section.

I also read around in Gary Vaynerchuk’s new book, Crushing It!: How Great Entrepreneurs Build Their Business and Influence-and How You Can, Too and was spontaneously motivated to shoot a video.

This is the result:

Are you planning to read some poetry in April? Who are some of your favorite poets? Or, are you like me and a bit leery of poetry?

  1. For those leery of poetry, I recommend the two volumes edited by Billy Collins: “Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry” and “180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day.” For many poets, April is more than National Poetry Month. It’s National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) and many of us take the challenge to write a poem a day. Yup, 30 poems in 30 days — scary, huh? There are many online groups that do this together (no critique, just encouragement and camaraderie). I’ve been participating for about 10 years. It gives us drafts to work on for the rest of the year. 🙂
