One Reader’s Pain is Another Reader’s Pleasure (I hope)

Books on the Nightstand Book Bingo is back! I downloaded my summer reading bingo card last night.

As you can see, the top left square is, “Hated by someone you know.”

I had this idea that it might be interesting to ask a bunch of people I know for a title they hated and then choose one from the list at random.

If you’re willing, please leave me a title below that you hated or, if public disclosure of unpleasantness is not your thing, email me at chris.wolak(at) I’d appreciate your reply by June 1st.

Yes, “hated” is a strong word, but there it is. I’m putting out this request with the hope that one reader’s pain is another reader’s pleasure.

Thanks for helping me out and if you’d like to download your own BOTNS Summer Bingo Card click here. It’s free and you don’t have to enter your email or any other info to get your randomized card (no two cards are the same).

  1. Hate might be a strong word, but I strongly disliked 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. As long as it is too, it could count as a few books for you. 🙂 and 🙁

  2. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Hate, hate, hated.

  3. The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien

  4. I haven't read anything by Murakami, but have been curious about his work. Thanks, Bryan, and it would cover a couple squares.

  5. Holy shit. I didn't anticipate THAT title coming down the turnpike! Guess it’s too late to turn back now. haha. Well, if it is The Chosen One I'll finally learn why so many of my friends hate this one. Thanks (I think) Adam!

  6. Thanks, Darlene! I've never heard of this one. Just read a bit about it and it sounds . . . interesting. 🙂 Will tell my mystery book group about it.

  7. Oh, that looks like a fun Bingo card! I personally have never been able to get through All the King's Men by RPW.

  8. I love this! lol Life After Life by Kate Atkinson! The Lovely Bones by what's-her-name!

  9. Danny's Mom by Elaine Wolf

  10. Oooh…mine would be The Humbling by Phillip Roth

  11. I disliked the Atkinson one so much I couldn't finish it. Lovely Bones is by Alice Sebold I think

  12. I actually hated that book too. both the writing and the philosophy…

  13. Good one! One of the old guys at work judges me for not reading that one. He isn't vocal about it, but I can tell. 😉

  14. Someone just told me the other day how much they enjoyed Life after Life. This is been such a fun experiment! I haven't read anything by Atkinson yet, so her number might be up for me. I'm only putting down one book per person, so dogged Lovely Bones. 🙂

  15. Haven't read that one. On the list it goes! Thanks!

  16. Haven't heard of that one or the author. Thanks, Vicki!

  17. I haven't read any Phillip Roth yet. He's one I feel like I “should” read though. Perhaps it'll happen sooner rather than later.

  18. I didn't make it far into any Henry James novels. Portrait of a Lady etc. Yawn Yawn.

  19. I couldn't finish A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Indiscriminate violence. Ugh. I couldn't take it. I shouldn't have mentioned it. Now you might have to read it.

  20. I liked A Portrait of a Lady but read it during a class with a good teacher. I want to give his The Bostonians another try.

  21. I saw the movie in a class. It was supposed to be a science fiction reading class but the teacher had us watch crazy movies instead. I've often wondered what the book was like. Looks like I might find out!

  22. A Confederacy of Dunces Paperback by John Kennedy Toole

  23. A Confederacy of Dunces Paperback by John Kennedy Toole

  24. I started that once upon a time and it just wasn't doing it for me, so I bagged it. I've often thought of giving it another try since so many people love it. That thought never lasts long. Thanks for the title!

  25. So sad I missed the deadline. My comment about Kate Atkinson seems to have disappeared into the ether. I can understand why people wouldn't like Confederacy of Dunces, but I thought it was pretty great (although not my usual cup of tea). There are whole authors I would through into this pile but I will limit myself to the first volume of Parade's End by Ford Madox Ford.

  26. This comment has been removed by the author.

  27. This was def a fun experiment and I'm happy you missed the deadline (not really, but glad I dodged FMF…not in the mood for him this summer). What was your comment about Kate Atkinson? I've yet to read anything by her.
