Earlier this month, I reviewed Thin Ice by Paige Shelton for Criminal Element. It’s the first in a new series by Shelton who is a prolific writer with multiple series to her name.

Thin Ice entertains from its opening line — “The good thing about being suddenly overcome with fresh terror is that you forget everything else you were afraid of” — to its conclusion.

The main character, Beth Rivers, is a best-selling author from Missouri who’s running away from the terror of being kidnapped. Luckily, she writes under a pen name so no one in Alaska knows who she is. Except for one person. Beth doesn’t remember much about her captivity, but details start to come back as her memory is triggered. She’s also healing from brain surgery due to a head injury sustained during her escape.

Beth’s recovery and the fall-out from her trauma is one part of the story. The other is that she’s staying in a halfway house for female felons which adds its own suspense to the story. Beth takes a job writing the local newspaper which had ceased to exist after the last editor/reporter/printer dropped dead. This gives her natural curiosity an official hat as she investigates a murder/suicide that happened just as she was arriving in Alaska. Is there a connection between her kidnapping and the recent murder/suicide?
